As a mobile device enthusiast I am always keeping an eye out for ways to improve my user experience as well as to access all my data. Remote access to your desktop from your mobile device is all the rage today, and there are now several alternatives ranging in functionality and price.

One of the first products I tried was Laplink Everywhere 4. LLE4 is a full-featured remote access application and service that allows you to conduct remote Google Desktop searches (MSN Search functionality is under development), control your desktop just like you are at sitting at the computer, transfer files to and from your desktop, check your PIM and e-mail remotely, and much more.

I tested the remote interface on Windows Mobile Pocket PCs and Smartphones, the Treo 650, Nokia 7610, and my Tablet PC. The interface is
optimized for mobile devices, and the system works quite well over EDGE and Wi-Fi, even with my hardware router firewall and software firewalls set up and running.

On my home computer I have three logins set up; one for myself (as the admin), one for my wife, and one for my daughters. If I have Windows XP set up with the Fast User Switching feature unchecked, when I try to login to my desktop from the road using Remote Desktop Control it will log off the person using the computer automatically without any warning. To prevent this, you should enable Fast User Switching so that the admin is not fully logged off the desktop; then you can login with Laplink Everywhere 4 using the File Transfer or Email/PIM interfaces rather than the Remote Desktop module.

You can also try using the Remote Control 4 interface with another user logged in.

If you are a road warrior and need full access to all your data as well as having the ability to remotely control your computer, you should give the Laplink Everywhere 4 application and service a try.
